Clinical Applications of Picosecond-Domain Lasers
Use of picosecond-domain lasers in therapeutic applications is reaching a mature stage. For pigmented lesions, including melasma, Hori’s nevus, tattoos, and lentiginous lesions, picosecond-domain lasers show better, or at least compatible, treatment results than nanosecond-domain Q-switched lasers. Picosecond-domain laser devices irradiate laser energy at extremely shorter pulse durations than nanosecond-domain lasers. Thereby, picosecond laser pulses are able to generate photothermal reactions more rapidly and deliver photoacoustic effects more extensively to target chromophores and surrounding tissues. Several clinical and experimental reports have revealed that various colors of tattoo chromophores can be effectively treated by picosecond lasers with a greater treatment response over fewer treatment sessions. Our study group recently experienced that asphalt- and sand-embedded tattoos caused by abrasions from a fall or motor-vehicle accident and graphite-embedded, pencil point puncture tattoos could be effectively and safely cleared after one to three sessions of 1,064-nm, picosecond-domain Nd:YAG laser treatment. Additionally, at various wavelengths, picosecond-domain lasers were effective in treating pigmented lesions with vascular components. Fractionated delivery of high-fluenced picosecond laser energy was found to provide additional therapeutic advantages of skin rejuvenation and treating refractory pigmented skin lesions.

Adrian is renowned for his easy manner, which many clients find appealing especially when dealing with issues they might find embarrassing, or hard to talk about.
