2.00 pm - 2.45 pm Dr Michael Vagg
Dr Vagg will be discussing the role of patient education and treatment groups in the rehabilitation management of chronic pain sufferers, especially what types of treatments should be part of a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to managing such patients. This will include an outline of drug trials, interventional pain treatments and self-management strategies.

2.45 pm - 3.30 pm Dr Pene Schmidt
Dr Schmidt will present an overview of treatment approaches in pain psychology, and review the strengths and weaknesses of each. She will outline the critically important concepts that a well-planned and conducted pain program should cover.

3.30 pm - 3.45 pm Afternoon Tea
 

3.45 pm - 4.30 pm Ms Jacqui Hunt
Ms Hunt will present a practical guide to the logisitcal and personnel issues that services face in implementing pain programs. She will cover the various roles of team members including nurses, allied health and medical team members. 

4.30 pm - 5.30 pm Interactive Discussion
This will be an interactive discussion about the challenges faced in setting up and maintaining self-management pain programs with participants able to bring their own experiences and concerns up for discussion with the presenting team, and other workshop participants.

Learning Objective:
1 To familiarise participants with the literature and best practice regarding pain self-management group programs
2. To provide a forum for participants to share their challenges and success stories about their own services
3.To provide a knowledge framework for participants to implement or refine such programs in their own services

Overview: 
This workshop will present the compelling evidence for providing properly-structured pain self-management programs to chronic pain sufferers. The presenters form the current team providing the longest established such program in Victoria and bring a wealth of theoretical and practical experience to the workshop.

This workshop will be of vital interest to the growing numbers of rehabilitation physicians and their teams who are tasked with establishing and running pain programs.
